We come to a point in our lives when we decide that we want our own home. We get sick of renting, living at our parent's house or with a friend and so we begin our journey to find a place of our own! That's when we are hit with a big question, do we want to buy an existing home? Or, do we want to build our own home?

       Investopedia dives into whether or not we should buy an existing home or build a new one from scratch. At the end of the day, it really comes down to the person and their preference. Investopedia goes over the pros and cons to both options here, so let's take a look at those!

Buying an existing home. This one was broken down into two categories, convenience and cost. Typically when you're looking to get a new home, you're looking to move in relatively soon, and how much sooner can you move in than a house that is already built and move-in ready?! Existing homes are more than likely going to be cheaper than building a home from scratch as it's already there. However, there may be a lot of repairs that need to be done to the home. It should be noted that in addition to that, the home may not have all of the rooms and features you'd like so some remodeling would need to be done there as well. It's convenient if you like a neighborhood, you just have to find a home nearby for sale that you like and get the buying process started!

Building a home. The first thing you want to do with this one is find land, and also make sure the land is good and secure so it won't be affected to drastically via weather or man-made areas. There's also worrying about what systems you need to put in it regards to water and sewage. HOWEVER, if you choose the route of building a new home, you're more than likely to get better materials for build and better build energy codes. In addition to that, a new home will have less health and safety concerns in terms of toxins and potential broken, rotted, or just unsafe old materials and structure based on older codes. Building  your own home means you can also customize it to look and feel however you want! You can create your dream home! A newer home will also require less repairs if done right and to be able to say you created that home and were the first ones to live there is simply, amazing!

       What it ultimately comes down to is your own preference based on your needs. We at Hamilton Building Services recommend going the latter route. Investopedia got it right when they said that building a new home will result in a healthier and stronger outcome for your home and yourself! However, they weren't necessarily correct when they said the build time is a lot longer. Is the build time long? Yes, depending on who you ask.
