7 Tips For Designing Small Houses

1. Windows - The more light that can circulate throughout your small space, the better. If you don't have enough windows, or windows that are strategically placed to let in the most sun possible, your space will be dark and seem smaller than it even is, as a result.

2. Raised ceilings - If you have the leeway to customize your home, you should consider high ceilings. Although they are an "empty" space to heat, they will make your space appear bigger, especially if you paint light colors.

3. Vary ceiling heights - When you vary your ceiling heights, it gives the illusion similar to what an open entryway can have by separating sections of your home into their own sections. This allows you to make smaller rooms bigger without building out, and instead building up.

4. Customize storage - This may be an expensive tip, but it will make your home more functional, you'll definitely prefer it, and it will add resale value to your small abode. Check out Pinterest to see what different kinds of wall niches, roll outs under beds, and other cool, built-in customizations are becoming more popular.

5. Light colors & pop colors - Using light tones tricks the eye to see a room as more spacious, and using pop colors, or bright colors, forces the eye to that wall of the room. Using these tricks can fool the eye into thinking a room is way bigger than it actually is.

6. Ditch hallways & corridors - If you don't have the space, don't force it. Eliminate hallways and corridors as much as you can, and keep too small spaces to a minimum.

7. Multi-purpose rooms - There is a tasteful way to do this, and a not-so-tasteful way to do this. Don't cram and try to over-do any particular room. Keep clutter out of your house, and make your rooms function in more way than one. For example, maybe you have a foyer area that can also function as your dining room. Be open!
