How To: Match Multiple Wood Finishes

Mixing and matching multiple wood finishes can either be a glorious or disastrous addition to your home decor. If done in an elegant fashion, pairing woods that contrast one another can give your home a warm, sophisticated vibe. Follow these tips to incorporate some varying wood finishes to your home's interior design.

#1 Contrasting colors work when it comes to mixing and matching differing wood finishes. For instance, light tones generally match moderately dark tones. Incorporating black and white painted woods with natural woods is a common trend.

#2 Add another color element to your decor so it does not appear to be wood on wood. Splitting up the differing wood finishes will trick the eye and give your decor a more consistent, smooth appearance.

#3 Don't go overboard when it comes to mixing and matching new wood finishes. If you get too crazy, it will be messy and lack consistency. Keeping it simple with a few, basic finishes will look much classier.

#4 Go with the grain when matching different wood finishes. If the direction and patterns of your woods are contrasting, the overall look will clash. Try to pick woods that have similar grain pattern and similar knots.
