Staining your deck: What you need to know

A deck not only adds value to your home, it's a place where friends and family make summer memories with cook outs, 4th of July partys and any other summer time celebrations you might have. Before you invite your guests over for a backyard get-together, revamp your deck by staining it. Staining your deck will give it a fresh, new look by highlighting the wood's natural beauty. Also, staining your deck annually can help keep the wood in good condition, and it can provide a shield between the wood and the elements outside, like rain and sunlight. Check out some pointers on how to efficiently stain your deck for this summer season!

  • Synthetic decking can be stained, however the composition of synthetics varies, so you should be sure to always read the manufacturer's recommendation.
  • Thoroughly clean and dry your deck first and make sure there isn't old chipped paint. Depending on your deck's condition, you may even consider pressure washing it.
  • Try to stain on a cloudy, rain-free day. Stain needs to be applied to a completely dry surface, so watch out for rain clouds. Also equally important is not staining on a super sunny day. The heat from the sun will dry out the stain before it gets the chance to soak into the wood, defeating the purpose.
  • Use a brush, not a roller. A roller seems easier, but you will save yourself time and a huge headache if you just start out right - with a brush. Only a brush will allow you to get into cracks and grooves while applying an even coat of stain.
  • Stain a few boards at a time. Work on 3-4 boards at a time and work your way down the length of the board.
