Finding the Right Neighborhood

When you're focused on purchasing or building a new house, the house itself tends to be the only thing on your mind. This is a common mistake that home buyers make, because no matter how perfect your home is, you can't change the neighborhood around it. You won't care how pristine your new home looks when you're too concerned about the crime rate, sky-high taxes, or irritating neighbors. Follow these helpful tips to make sure you relocate to a neighborhood that fits your needs and desires!

1. Visit the area a few times to take a look around before making a final decision. The age-old saying, "never judge a book by its cover," does not apply, here. Your neighbors may not have the fanciest house, but observing how they take care of their house and how they present their abode to the world can say a lot about someone's character. If the lawn looks like a jungle every time you visit, it can be a good indicator that those neighbors are not as tidy as you may be. Always remember that neighbors come into play if you ever need to re-sell a home.

2. Check out what the taxes would be like if you were to decide to move to the neighborhood. All of this information can be found online by researching the state's department of revenue.

3. School systems are usually referred to as "good" or "bad." These loose terms can mean a lot of different things, so you'll want to do some research if you have children who will be attending the local schools. One great way to delve into the neighborhood's school system is to attend a school board meeting. Attending a meeting will give you an in-depth look into the school's efficiency, and it will give you the opportunity to chat with other local parents, teachers, and school administration.

4. Crime rate can really make or break an area. You can do your own research on this matter, but a good starting place can be online. Look up the recent crime in the area to measure how frequent crime is and to also look at what types of crimes are committed most often.
